This is the most common question before winter. The short answer: it depends on where and how you drive. Below is a comparison based on what matters on Estonian roads.
If you often drive out of town
Studs give the best grip on ice and packed snow. They suit country and gravel roads where ice stays all winter. They are noisier on clear asphalt, and there are time limits on using them, so check the Transport Administration rules.
If you mostly drive in the city and on main roads
A friction tyre works through soft rubber and many sipes. It is quieter than a studded tyre, more comfortable on wet and dry asphalt and in slush, which Tallinn sees more often than clear ice. On bare ice it falls behind studs.
